Obituary

Al Jonathan Wimpy, 85, passed away peacefully at his home in Dahlonega, Georgia, on November 29, 2025, with his family by his side.

Al was born on February 1, 1940, to Archie "Guy" Wimpy and Blonnie Jones Wimpy. A lifelong Dahlonega native, he attended Lumpkin County High School, where he was one of 51 graduating seniors. In 1960, Al married Elizabeth Ann Moore, and together they shared 65 years of marriage.

The young couple made their first home in New Port Richey, Florida, where Al followed in his father's footsteps and joined the family trucking business. In the late 1960s, he launched his first independent venture, establishing Appalachian Material Service, a concrete business that served Lumpkin County, Georgia. After many years, he and two of his brothers sought a new opportunity and created Wimpy Brothers, Inc., a company that transported road-construction materials supporting the expansion of Florida's Interstate 75. In 1980, he established his own business, AMS, which specialized in transporting biosolids for towns and municipalities along Florida's southwest Gulf Coast, with the unwavering support of Davis Brothers of Thomasville, Georgia.

Upon retiring, Al and Ann returned to Dahlonega, where he lived for the next 37 years. Although his work took him many places, Dahlonega was the place Al never truly left.

Al was devoted to his community. He became a member of Dahlonega Baptist Church in 1955. When he returned home, he served as a City Council member, a Director for Dahlonega BB&T, and a Board Member of the Dahlonega-Lumpkin County Chamber of Commerce. He also volunteered on the team that helped preserve the historic Holly Theater. His appreciation for nature led him to become an early advocate for protecting Eastern Hemlock trees in North Georgia, where he served as a volunteer with Save Georgia's Hemlocks.

Al's life was enriched by the many activities he enjoyed with family and friends, including freshwater and saltwater fishing, travel, diving and snorkeling, aviation, and golf. He dedicated many hours to researching family history and held a deep appreciation for the genealogy of longtime Dahlonega families, the stewardship of small rural church cemeteries, and the preservation of the stories found within them.

He was preceded in death by his father, Guy Wimpy, and his stepmother, Kathleen ("Billie") Wimpy; his mother, Blonnie Jones Wimpy; his son, Jon Wimpy; and two brothers, Archie and Charles Wimpy.

Al is survived by his wife, Ann, and his daughter, Katherine Carey; his siblings Jackie Lee, Patricia Adams (Edral), Nancy Howle (Bill), William Wimpy (Tracy), and Debby Thomas (Trent); his-grandchildren Casey Wimpy (Joe), Ruthie Kendall (Paul), Henry Carey, and Brecken Wallenga; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews from both the Wimpy and Moore families.

Funeral services will be held at Dahlonega Baptist Church on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at 2 p.m., with visitation from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home.
