Dr. August Baldwin Turner died in Suches, Ga. at age 94, after a full life filled with good works and fun. He was predeceased by his parents, Augusta and Dr. John W. Turner; brother, John W. Turner, Jr.; and sister, Olga Duffey. Born and raised in Atlanta, he attended Spring Street School, Marist College on to University of Georgia, where he was a Sigma Chi, Harvard University, and Tulane University Medical School, where he was a Phi Chi. After internship at San Francisco Southern Pacific Hospital, August spent 2 years in the Pacific as the Medical Officer on the USS Ringgold. After one year as a doctor for occupation forces in Tokyo, Japan, he left the Navy as a Lieutenant in 1945. Returning to Atlanta, he completed his residency at Grady Memorial Hospital, includingsurgical care for the survivors of the Winecoff Hotel fire in 1946. During his long career as a general surgeon, August was visiting staff at Piedmont, Crawford Long and St. Joseph Hospitals. Later, he was a part of the teaching staff at Georgia Baptist Medical Center. August was a member of the Fulton County Medical Society, Ga. Medical Assoc., The American Medical Assoc., The American College of Surgical Assoc., The Internal College of Surgeons, The Southeastern Surgical Assoc., and The Atlanta Clinical Society. He was a charter member of Cherokee Town & Country Club and a life member of Capital City Club. An avid traveler and gardener, August and wife Teresa moved in 1988 to the Suches, Ga. mountains to fulfill his goal of being a gentleman farmer and to continue to explore the globe. He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Teresa Tidmore Turner; sons August B. "Winn" Turner, Jr.(Lee) and John W. Turner, II; grandsons, Christopher Turner (Amy) and Andrew Turner(Lillian); and 3 great-grandsons, Jet, Will, and Colin. He is also survived by his sister, Mathilde Turner Howell, and many nieces and nephews. There will be a funeral service on Saturday, August 15 at 1:00PM at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church in Suches, Ga.
