Obituary

Benson Brooks, age 89, of Dahlonega, Georgia, passed away on March 5, 2026.

Born on April 16, 1936, in Belton, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Sybil Autry Brooks and the late Leslie McBride Brooks.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Macie Booth Brooks.

Benson was a man who deeply loved the outdoors and found great peace and solace in nature. He enjoyed hiking, camping, and especially jogging. Running became a lifelong passion, and he proudly participated in the Peachtree Road Race from its early years. Over the course of his running life, he completed both a half marathon and a full marathon. For many years, he was also an active member of the Sumo Jogging Club in the Stone Mountain area, where he formed lasting friendships through his love of running.

In 2004, Benson moved to Dahlonega, a place he quickly came to cherish and call home. He was a faithful and active member of Dahlonega Methodist Church, where his quiet presence and steady faith were appreciated by many.

Benson will be remembered as the peacemaker of his family—the voice of reason and calm in difficult moments. Though a quiet man, he was known for his honesty, kindness, and gentle spirit. He was simply a very good person who found his balance and calmness in the beauty of the outdoors.

He is survived by his children, Benny McBride Brooks of Atlanta and Cheryl Lynn Brooks of Dallas, GA.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Dahlonega Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Schofield officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 AM until the service hour.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a Alzheimer's research of your choice, or to the TLC Animal Shelter, in honor of Mr. Brooks.
