The master craftsman joined the Great Healer as Frank Armstrong passed away at age 78 after a courageous battle with cancer. A Dahlonega native known for his quiet strength and deep devotion to his wife, Barbara—whom he rarely called anything but “Sugar”—Frank modeled faith and steady leadership for his sons, Jeff (Libbie) and Greg (Katie) Armstrong.
Raised by his mother, Kate, alongside his brothers Dennis Reeves, Henry, James, and Larry Armstrong following the early loss of his father, Dillard, and sister, Annell, Frank learned self-reliance early. He knew he struck gold when he met Barbara, and they married soon after she graduated from high school, beginning a remarkable 56-year marriage where her outgoing charm perfectly complemented his quiet nature.
A master mason, Frank’s craftsmanship shaped North Georgia, from Dahlonega’s sidewalks to homes on Lakes Rabun and Burton. Though his legendary artistry was once featured on the cover of Southern Living, he remained a humble man who never sought recognition.
Frank was happiest with family—whether at a ball field, on the beach, or cheering on his grandchildren, Rylan, Wyatt, and Charlotte. He cherished memories of a Western road trip with Barbara, Sandy, and Jon Moore, as well as years of fishing at Cape San Blas with dear friends Brad Walker, Thomas Edwards, and their families.
Frank was greeted in glory by his parents, his sister, and his brothers Dennis and James. He will be forever missed by Barbara, his sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and extended family. Special thanks to his nieces, Jan Graham, Jennifer Snow, Madi Marshall, Missy Armstrong and Nicole Purdy, and his brothers Larry and Henry for their loving care and support in his final days. Frank was a lifelong member of St. Paul Methodist Church.
