Obituary

David Broad, born 1946 in Brooklyn, New York. Dave had a 56 year teaching career, beginning teaching high school in Houston, and from 1974 onward teaching in universities, including the State University of New York, Tennessee State University and culminating in 18 years at the University of North Georgia. Dave was also a coach of cross country and track & field, including coaching an NCAA 1600 meter relay national championship team in 1983. As an athlete, Dave ran 88 marathons, winning the gold medal in the master's marathon at the Empire State Games in 1987 and he was second at the North Coast 100 Mile in 1985. Dave was active at the Historic Holly Theatre for ten years, performing some featured roles in musicals and comedies and he did the intro speeches for several dozen Holly shows. He was a graduate of South Texas Junior College, the University of Houston, Canisius College, and the University at Buffalo. Dave leaves behind his sister Anita Scott of Pearland, Texas, his first wife Patricia Broad of Buffalo and their daughter Laura Voorhees of Trumansburg, New York, his second wife Judy Dawdy of Dahlonega, as well as grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions in David's memory would be gratefully accepted by the Historic Holly Theater , where the community is always centerstage, or to ConnectAbility , who helps children and adults with disabilities.

A celebration of life will be held at The Georgia Mountains Unitarian Universalist Church at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 2, 2024.
