Edna Moss
Odom
February 11, 1920 – November 5, 2020
Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home announces that Edna Moss Odom, age 100, of Dahlonega, Georgia peacefully passed away surrounded by her family on Thursday, November 5, 2020. Edna was born in Lumpkin County on February 11, 1920 to the late Major Moss and the late Floye Rider Moss. During Edna's 100 years on this earth, she witnessed many events and changes. She was born at the start of The Great Depression, however, neither she nor her family ever knew it was happening. Living in the hills of Lumpkin County, the days of The Depression seemed a lot like any other day - working the land, gathering food out of the garden for supper, keeping the horses fed so that you could get into town on your wagon, and building relationships amongst family and community through the soft, yet strong bonds of sharing. Once The Depression diminished, Edna carried on and passed down these traits that have now seen five generations. In 1925, Edna saw the first Transatlantic Flight in history as Lindbergh flew over their homeplace in Lumpkin County. Even days before she passed, she could recall memories of riding in some of the first Model A and Model T cars. The technology that she was able to witness evolve was unbelievable, from the first phones and televisions, to Facebook, of which she was always "playing" on.
Edna was a homemaker, and hard work was her middle name. She believed that no one on God's beautiful earth should sleep past sunrise. She spent a lot of time even in her later years gardening, canning, cooking and quilting. If you were fortunate enough to know her, then you never had to question whether or not you had a friend. Never once did her family witness her say a negative word about someone else. She was humble, kind, gracious, and strong. When it comes to strength, hers was unmeasurable - physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. In 2003, Edna became a cancer survivor. It never once got her down and the doctors said she handled it better than even most young people.
In Edna's spare time, and when she had someone to drive her, she would often head towards the thrift shops, stopping at any and every yard sale in between. She visited the thrift stores in and around Dahlonega so often that many of the clerks affectionately knew her as "Grandma". Also, around Christmas every year, Edna would get busy making caps for all of the "Old People'' at the nursing homes. One thing held true until her final days on this earth, whether you were a clerk, an "Old Person", a friend, a family member, or a stranger, nothing would put a smile on your face quite like seeing Mrs. Edna Odom coming your way.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, Spencer Odom; sisters, Cleo Moss, Edith Mincey, Bonnie Lou Edwards, and Adele Bruce; and granddaughter, Sherrie Lynn Odom.
She is survived by her children, AW Odom, Mae (Frank) Cain, Benny (Katrina Walker) Odom, Mary Ann (Pat) Cain, Martha Perry (Ray) Johnstone, and Rhonda (Jim) Bennett, all of Dahlonega; siblings, Pauline Rider, Leona Rider, Viola Sheffield, Leon (Doris) Moss, Marvine Grizzle, and Josie (Irvin) Barrett, all of Dahlonega; grandchildren, Kim (Bruce) Dibble, Scott Cain, Joy (Mat) Handte, Christie Odom, Aimee (Jim) Guidetti, Daffney (Daniel) Osborn, Danny (Amanda) Perry, Tonya Perry, David Keller, Chad Keller, and Ben Keller; 20 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a very special friend, Mrs. Linda Haig. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives.
Funeral Services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Saturday, November 7, 2020 in the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Barrett officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, prior to the service. Interment will follow in the cemetery of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in Dahlonega.
