Glenn William
Jones
January 4, 1949 – March 7, 2026
Glenn William Jones, a beloved husband, father, craftsman, and devoted servant of his community, passed away at home with his family at his side on March 7, 2026, at the age of 77. Born on January 4, 1949, in the foothills of Dahlonega, Georgia, Glenn spent his life rooted in the land, the people, and the heritage he cherished deeply.
Glenn came of age in Dahlonega, graduating from Lumpkin County High School in 1967, then being the first in his family to earn a degree from North Georgia College in 1970 — an institution that would later remain close to his heart throughout his professional life. His career was as varied as it was purposeful. He worked as a Field Serviceman at Owen's Farm, held a supervisory position at Torrington, and honed his craft at Cane Creek Millwork. Together with his wife Gloria, he co-owned GJ's Sandwich Shoppe while also managing the Buttercup Ice Cream Parlor on the Dahlonega square. Next, a co-owner of Main St. Video 1 & 2, Glenn continued to build not just businesses but gathering places for the community. He ultimately found his professional calling at the University of North Georgia, where he served with distinction as Director of Auxiliary Services for 17 years.
Glenn's hands told the story of a man who loved to create. A master woodworker of rare skill, he could transform raw timber into works of beauty and function, each piece a quiet testament to his patience and precision. He was an avid reader with a particular love of science fiction — always curious, always imagining what lay beyond the horizon. In quieter hours, he devoted himself to genealogy, tracing family lines with the same care and dedication he brought to everything he did.
The profound pride of Glenn's life was his Cherokee heritage. He was instrumental in discovering new Cherokee heritage familial links and assisting others in discovering their heritage. Aware of his Cherokee ancestry through his maternal grandmother, using Cherokee Rolls, he also discovered and documented a previously unknown Cherokee heritage through his maternal grandfather.
A member of the Georgia Tribe of Eastern Cherokee (GTEC), he served on the Tribal Council for more than 40 years, holding many roles, including Tribal Council Member, Enrollment Chairman, and Financial Manager. He was a keeper of memory, a man whose wealth of knowledge about the history of the Tribe is irreplaceable. Beyond the Tribe, he served on the Lumpkin County Native American Advisory Board and worked alongside the Georgia Council on American Indian Concerns to ensure that the voices and stories of his people are heard and honored.
Glenn is survived by the love of his life, his wife Gloria S. Jones; his son R. Gabriel Jones; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Linda S. Harrison and Franklin M. Harrison; his sisters-in-law Betty R. Simpson, Virginia P. Simpson, and Mozelle W. Simpson; and his sister by another mother, Martha H. Doster.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James E. Jones and Bessie Maude B. Jones; his stepmother, Corene E. Patton Jones; his parents-in-law, Grover E. Simpson, Lillian F. Simpson Lancaster, and his stepfather-in-law Ray H. Lancaster; and his brothers-in-law, James E. Simpson, Grover J. (Jacky) Simpson, and Jeffery D. Simpson, Sr.
Per Glenn's wishes, no services will be held at this time. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to local organizations in his honor:
