Larry was born in Atlanta, GA on February 22, 1950 to the late Robert Carlton and Katherine Garmon Cates. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandsons Christopher Dover and Jason Anthony Richardson; sisters Patsy O'Kelly and Carol Saffles; brothers William Paul Cates and Robert Lee Cates.  Larry attended Harvest Baptist Church.  He was a concrete truck driver and has given 45 years of dedicated work. He loved to fish and you would most likely find him at Woody's private pond.  Larry will be remembered for his craftsmanship in making deer antler handled knives.

Survivors include his wife, of 46 years, Tonnie Cates; daughters Sherry Lynn Cates and Kristina Cates; son Timothy Lane Cates; son and daughter in law Michael and Christy Richardson; sisters and brothers in law Jackie and George Hare; Gail Genson and Gus Pierce; Sherry and Robert Graham; Brenda and Jeff Gustafson; brother and sister in law Charlie E. and Sue Cates; 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 AM Saturday, January 6, 2018 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Jeff Parrington will officiate. Interment will follow in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-8 PM Friday at the funeral home.
