Obituary

The Patriarch of the Gay Family, the Buddha of Dahlonega, beloved friend to so many, and our dear
daddy and husband, Leonard R. Gay, passed away on 1/4/2023 after a battle with kidney failure.

We know this is a heartbreaking loss for many people, and we're so grateful for the love and support shown
to our family. Leonard was an incredibly bright light who thrived on connecting people and spreading joy
by sharing his passion for music and the talented musicians he loved so much. He was frustratingly
smart and taught us to think things through logically. He had a very strong moral compass which played
a big part in his activism. He would often ask us things like "what have you done to fight racism today?"
and "how are you getting involved in your community activism efforts?" He loved to have deep,
philosophical conversations with people and constantly do as much learning, thinking, and reading as
possible. He also had a truly genuine interest in people and loved asking everyone about their
experiences, thoughts, and feelings (and, of course, if they sang or played any instruments).

He was deeply in love with and fiercely proud of his wife and best friend of over 44 years, always telling people
what a lucky man he was. Most people around Dahlonega have heard his loud "YEAH!" over a good song
at a jam in town. Many people have seen him weep during songs he felt the beauty of so deeply. One of
the last things he said shortly before he died was "more than we deserve". He said that through a spasm
and groan of pain as our mom thanked the medical staff at the hospital for their great care.
We are figuring out arrangements but plan to hold a concert in Dahlonega in the early spring to
celebrate his life. If there is anything Leonard enjoyed more than listening to music, it was watching
others listen to it and experience the same joy it brought him. We hope to have a celebration he would
be proud of.

Thank you all again for the continuous love and support shown to our family. Leonard loved
this whole community so much and seeing the love people had for him as well means so much.
