Madelyn Anthony
Henderson
October 9, 1924 – November 6, 2022
Madelyn Anthony Henderson passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2022 at the age of 98. Madelyn was born at home on October 9, 1924 in Douglasville Georgia to John Durham and Madeleine Kiker Anthony. Her family moved to Tifton where her brother Jack was born. In 1933 her family moved to Dahlonega when John Durham became a professor at North Georgia College. Madelyn's youngest brother, Jimmy, was born in Dahlonega. Her mother, Madeleine Anthony, became the curator of the North Georgia Gold Museum, which sits in the middle of the square in downtown Dahlonega. Madeleine was passionate about North Georgia history and worked diligently with the state to ensure the information was archived. She was instrumental in working to obtain the gold for the Capitol dome in Atlanta and also the wagon train that took the gold to Atlanta.
Madelyn attended North Georgia College and the University of Georgia where she majored in English. While in college, she met the love of her life, Frank Henderson. After his return from WWII, they were married in 1945. They moved to Albany, Georgia where she resided for most of her life. They had four sons: Brian, Gary, Terry, and Ken. Madelyn and Frank were active in the community and in their church. While Madelyn was a homemaker raising her four boys, she also enjoyed basket making. She attended many classes with a close friend and mastered the craft, making lovely baskets for her home and her family members. Some of her baskets won ribbons, and she also taught a class about basket making at Carlyle Place in Macon, Georgia, where she lived since March 2003.
Madelyn had seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren whom she adored. She taught them to play Rummikub and Canasta and would look at your cards if you had them visible. If you visited her home, she always made sure you were fed and comfortable. She made delicious icebox cookies around the holidays and caramel cakes for Frank's birthday. Madelyn and Frank passed along their love of crafts and art to their grandchildren who now enjoy pottery, sewing, knitting, and more.
Madelyn is preceded in death by her husband, Frank Lee Henderson, Jr. (1921-2001), and her youngest brother, James Lee Anthony (Jimmy) (1934-1969). She is survived by her younger brother, John Durham Anthony, Jr. (Jack), her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren: Brian Frederick Henderson, Gary Alan Henderson and his wife Katherine, Terry Anthony Henderson and his wife Van, Kenneth Lee Henderson (Ken) and his wife Peggy; Victoria Henderson Bowers and her husband Brandon, John Henderson, Kea Henderson, Maddie Henderson, Durham Henderson, Maggie Henderson, and Stephen Henderson; Berkeley Reese Bowers and Collins Rae Bowers.
The family will hold a graveside service on Sunday, November 20, 2022 at 2:00 pm in Dahlonega. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Methodist Home for Children and Youth & Youth (https://www.themethodisthome.org/donate/) or Epworth by the Sea (https://www.epworthbythesea.org/support.php).
